Former union minister Jaswant Singh is set to be the NDA’s vice-presidential candidate. Sources said the Opposition alliance would announce his candidature at a meeting scheduled to be held tomorrow.

While the BJP has reportedly made its choice known to its allies, the JD(U) and Shiv Sena, which broke ranks with the BJP and supported UPA candidate Pranab Mukherjee for the President’s post, are expected to back Singh also.

“The Shiv Sena will support the NDA candidate in the vice-presidential election,” said senior Sena leader and Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut today, on the eve of the NDA meeting.

However, NDA convenor and JD(U) president Sharad Yadav said the decision would be announced after the meeting tomorrow. When asked about the possibility of his own candidature, as suggested in some media reports, Yadav said he would not like to comment on speculation.

Gopalkrishna Gandhi...thanked Mamata :

Former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi said on Sunday that he would not contest the vice-presidential election. “I have thanked Mamata Banerjee for having thought of me,” he said. “Some people approached me, but I said thank you, I will not (contest)”.
